Tribal rugs are rugs that were traditionally woven by nomadic groups throughout the Middle East and Asia. Some of the tribes most well-known for their weaving are the Qashqai, Turks, Kurds, and Belouch. Each tribe would create hand-woven rugs with images and designs that were of personal significance. Today, tribal rugs are very popular because of their beautiful colors, unique patterns, and cryptic symbols.

Tribal rugs have evolved from being a very functional and practical item to carefully crafted conversation pieces that provide color, character, and richness to homes and businesses all over the world. They are usually woven with wool, or a combination of wool and cotton, using a complex knotted pile technique. Tribal rugs have many different names, each corresponding with a particular tribe or tribal region. Kazak, for instance, are rugs that were woven by Turkish nomads. Today, they are woven by various groups, but the patterns, shapes, and colors are characteristic of the traditional Kazak style.

Admirers and collectors of tribal rugs appreciate them for the time and effort that goes into making them and learning about the design characteristics unique to each tribe. These characteristics, or “motifs” are common patterns and designs that have a specific meaning. Some of the more popular motifs you’ll find in tribal rugs are ram horns (which represent power and fertility), the cross (symbolizing the four forces of nature), and the eight-pointed star (symbolizing happiness).
